But they’re kind of a nightmare in the long run. The problem is simple: water and hot glass don’t get along. When a stray droplet or a cloud of steam hits that scorching quartz bulb, the glass can actually crack from the shock. It’s a recipe for a burnt-out bulb or, worse, a tripped breaker right when you’re trying to dry off. That’s why we’re seeing a big move toward high-IP infrared (IR) heaters. The secret is in the seal. If you see “IP44” on a heater, don’t let the jargon bore you. All it really means is that the guts of the machine are sealed tight. It keeps the spray and the steam away from the electrical bits. You get the heat you want without worrying if your bathroom is turning into a sauna. It just works. And the heat itself? It feels different. Those old lamps use short-wave radiation, which can feel a bit harsh—almost like a heat lamp at a buffet. Modern IR units use coated tubes to soften that effect. Instead of a blinding glare, you get a deep, penetrating warmth that actually reaches your skin. Plus, they use reflectors to push all that energy down toward you, rather than just heating up your ceiling. A couple of things to keep in mind. If you’re swapping these into an old fixture, it’s usually a pretty straightforward job. But do a quick check on your wattage. These IR arrays pull a bit more juice than a single old bulb. If your wiring is ancient, you might notice the power dipping. Also, be prepared for a slightly bigger footprint. Because these units are built to be waterproof, the housing is a bit chunkier than a slim lamp holder. You lose a tiny bit of ceiling space, but it’s a fair trade for a heater that won’t shatter the moment things get steamy.
